Memory

Describing the past is always difficult,
Especially when there is no clear target.
Choosing what to recall is the first step
One could choose something specific to recall,
or make a start and branch out tangents of thought.
The two compare like a sniper rifle to its ricochet.
One is precise, passing through thickets of thought for miles on end,
landing on the head of a (un)fortunate thought.
The other leaps, continuing from one thought to the next.
One takes practice, the other comes naturally.
Say you want to recall…….
What should… Belugas
That’s something
The forehead of belugas are squishy
It's a big fat piece used to help their “sonar”
How would the ping of a sonar sound on land?
Well you have to get the sub on land first
Would one of those semi-submersible ships work?
Where the heck would you put the sub though?
Just stick it upright in the middle of manhattan
How well would that fit in ?
A Typhoon class is about 175 meters I think
So about half the Empire State then
I say it can probably fit in half way decently
Yea but it isn’t built for lengthwisWHALES
NOT SUBS ON LAND
Right
Back on track
Those are so cute, and smart
Got water splashed on me once when I went to an ocean world
Where was that
New Yor… no, California
Their foreheads feel like jello
Got to touch one of them that time
Hot summer day, before the pandemic
Blue skies, no clouds
Just little white fairies swimming around in the pool
Well, “Little”
Didn’t I see otters and penguins and giraffes as well?
Giraffes?
Wait
This was in Sydney, not in California
Right
Me, mom and dad
Saw breakdancing for the first time
Dude in a red helmet, on the edge of park
There was a navy ship docked near that park
Helipad on the back
Too small to be the Hobart class
Maybe not? A destroyer is still like 150m long
I don’t know how big that feels on a ship though…
WHALES, NOT SHIPS
right
Got to feed sea lions that time as well
Those belugas sure were good at scaring little kids
They would swim up to the glass, and suddenly open their mouths
Always got a jump out of them
Can’t remember the exact time
2017…18-ish
I think
November or December probably
Since their seasons are reversed
Good point

Deciduous Trees and Fire Hydrants
The poem compares life's transient nature, symbolized by deciduous trees and stationary fire hydrants, to human experiences of fleeting happiness and enduring melancholy. It emphasizes the beauty of genuinely feeling, remembering, and cherishing moments, especially amid loss and sadness.
